Digital Iron Loss Tester DW-22 | Single Sheet Core Loss / Watt Loss Tester

The DW-22 Digital Iron Loss Tester is a portable and practical single sheet tester for measuring iron loss/ core loss / watt loss in electrical steel sheets and laminations. Designed for fast and repeatable material evaluation, the DW-22 is suitable for CRGO (grain-oriented electrical steel), CRNO (non-oriented electrical steel), transformer laminations, EI laminations, motor stampings, and other electrical steel components.

The instrument provides a direct W/kg reading, allowing operators to quickly evaluate the magnetic performance and specific loss of an electrical steel sample without complex manual calculations. Its compact design, simple operation, and rapid measurement make it particularly useful for incoming material inspection, production quality control, process verification, laboratory testing, and routine evaluation of electrical steel used in transformers, motors, generators, and other electromagnetic applications.

Unlike a conventional Epstein tester, which requires multiple standardized strips to be cut, prepared, and assembled into an Epstein frame, a single-sheet testing approach allows the magnetic properties of an individual sheet or finished lamination to be evaluated quickly. This makes the DW-22 especially convenient when a rapid indication of material quality is required during production or inspection.

Direct Iron Loss / Watt Loss Measurement

The DW-22 displays the measured loss directly in W/kg, making it easy to compare electrical steel samples and identify variations in material quality.

Depending on the application, electrical steel is commonly evaluated in terms of specific total loss, iron loss, core loss, or watt loss. These losses are important indicators of the magnetic performance of steel used in transformer cores, motor cores, generators, and other magnetic circuits.

By entering the required specimen information, such as sample thickness and magnetic induction (flux density) in Tesla, the instrument processes the measured magnetic signals and provides the corresponding loss value.

Operating Principle

The DW-22 uses a specialized magnetic probe with primary and secondary windings. When the probe is placed on the electrical steel specimen, it forms a magnetic circuit with the sample and magnetizes the material according to transformer operating principles.

The primary winding generates the magnetizing field, while the secondary winding detects the induced magnetic signal from the specimen. The instrument processes these electrical signals together with the selected test parameters to determine the iron loss / watt loss of the electrical steel sample.

This probe-based single-sheet measurement arrangement enables rapid testing without requiring a complete Epstein frame setup. Single-sheet testers use a magnetic yoke/probe arrangement to close the magnetic path through the specimen, providing a convenient method for evaluating individual electrical-steel sheets and components

Why Choose the DW-22?

The DW-22 combines the functions commonly required for everyday electrical steel testing and iron-loss measurement in a compact instrument:

  • Digital iron loss measurement
  • Single-sheet core loss testing

  • Suitable for CRGO and CRNO electrical steel
  • Suitable for EI laminations and motor stampings
  • Suitable for transformer laminations and electrical-steel components
  • Portable and compact design
  • Fast measurement for production inspection
  • Simple operation for routine quality control
  • Probe-based magnetic measurement
  • Useful for incoming material inspection and production verification

Whether you need a digital iron loss tester, single sheet tester, watt loss tester, core loss tester, CRGO tester, CRNO tester, or electrical steel testing instrument, the DW-22 provides a practical solution for rapid evaluation of magnetic losses in electrical steel sheets and laminations.

Customers that require to test small stamping, EI lamination sheets, motor laminations, and other types of small laminated sheet samples, they should buy Small Probe.

If there is no need for testing small laminated sheets, then you should select Big Probe, as the effective area is bigger for the big probe.

Big effective area produces comparatively accurate result.

Big probe (Standard)

Effective specimen area: 60mm X 20mm

Big probe is the standard probe provided when you purchase DW22.
This probe covers 60mm by 20mm area of the sample sheet.

It is advised to use standard sample size when using big probe.

Standard sample size is 305mm by 30mm.

Small probe

Effective specimen area: 45mm X 15mm

Small probe is provided on request from the customer, when the sample surface area is small, we can use small probe to measure the quality of lamination.

Customer can purchase small probe for measurement of watt loss of Motor stampings, EI laminations of transformers etc.

The DW-22 can be used for testing a wide range of electrical steel sheets, silicon steel, magnetic steel laminations, and stamped components, including:

  • CRGO / grain-oriented electrical steel used for transformer cores
  • CRNO / non-oriented electrical steel used for motors and generators
  • Transformer core laminations
  • Motor laminations and motor stampings
  • EI laminations
  • Stator and rotor stampings
  • Electrical steel sheet and strip
  • Finished and semi-finished magnetic components
  • Incoming electrical steel material inspection
  • Production-line quality control
  • Laboratory material comparison and evaluation

The single-sheet tester method is particularly useful for quick and tentative evaluation of iron loss before material is incorporated into a transformer or motor core. Single-sheet testing is widely used for electrical-steel magnetic characterization and quality-control applications, while the Epstein frame remains an established reference method for standardized measurements.

Fast Testing for Production & Quality Control

The DW-22 is designed with practical production testing in mind. Its portable construction, straightforward operation, direct digital readout, and fast measurement process allow operators to perform electrical-steel checks with minimal setup.

It can be used for:

  • Incoming raw-material inspection
  • Supplier material verification
  • Electrical steel grade comparison
  • Transformer lamination inspection
  • Motor stamping inspection
  • Production quality control
  • Process verification
  • Troubleshooting unexpected core losses
  • Laboratory comparison of electrical steel samples
  • Quick evaluation before full Epstein testing

The ability to test individual sheets or stamped components can be particularly useful when the material is already in a finished or partially finished form and preparing a conventional Epstein specimen would be inconvenient.

The DW22 measures the iron loss (W/kg) of electrical steel sheets, including CRGO, CRNO, motor laminations, EI laminations, and other electrical steel materials using the single sheet testing method.

The DW22 can test CRGO steel, CRNO steel, electrical steel sheets, HR steel, motor stampings, EI laminations, and both oriented and non-oriented electrical steels.

No. The DW22 supports various specimen sizes and can test small (Minimum size of surface = 45 mm × 15 mm) as well as large samples.

The DW22 uses a magnetic probe containing primary and secondary windings to complete the magnetic circuit with the specimen. The measured electrical signals are processed to calculate iron loss in Watt/kg.

Yes. With the optional small probe, the DW22 is ideal for testing motor laminations, EI laminations, and other small electrical steel components.

You will be getting 1 Big probe with the instrument purchase, you can specify which probe you would like to purchase at the time. you can also buy multiple probes with 1 instrument.

Yes. The DW22 is specifically designed for fast routine inspection, incoming material verification, and production quality control.

DW-22 Single Sheet Tester vs. Epstein Tester

The DW-22 Single Sheet Digital Iron Loss Tester and an Epstein Tester serve complementary purposes.

An Epstein frame test uses standardized strips of electrical steel assembled into a magnetic circuit and is widely used for standardized magnetic-property measurements. Preparing Epstein specimens requires cutting strips in specified directions and assembling them correctly in the frame.

A single-sheet tester, on the other hand, is designed for rapid evaluation of an individual electrical steel sheet or lamination. This makes the DW-22 particularly useful for production environments, incoming inspection, and quick material comparison.

For applications requiring standardized, high-precision or reference magnetic-property measurements, an Epstein frame tester should be used according to the applicable test standard. The DW-22 is intended as a convenient and efficient solution for routine and comparative testing.
